Webster County, IA — A Lehigh woman, Harlie Mallinger, was arrested last week after allegedly stabbing two dogs in her home. The incident, which occurred on August 1, has led to charges of animal neglect and mistreatment causing serious injury or death.
Stabbing Incident Details
Mallinger, 41, is facing two counts of animal neglect with serious injury or death and two counts of animal mistreatment causing serious injury or death — all aggravated misdemeanors. According to court documents, Mallinger allegedly stabbed an American bulldog and a terrier in the chest with a knife at her Lehigh residence.
“She intentionally tried to destroy or injure the dogs,” court documents state.
The blood pools were discovered in the home’s basement, where the dogs were kept. Authorities believe the injuries were inflicted intentionally, with the animals left in a state of neglect.
Veterinarian Care and Conditions of the Dogs
A news release from Webster County Animal Protection, who assisted with the case, revealed that both dogs were rushed to a veterinarian for treatment. The release also highlighted that the dogs had been deprived of adequate food and water, and had not received proper medical care when diagnosed with mange.
“The animals were also covered in feces and infection,” the news release added.
This case has drawn public attention due to the horrific condition of the animals and the severe nature of the alleged abuse.
Mallinger Held on Bond, Upcoming Court Hearing
Mallinger is currently being held at the Webster County Jail on a $20,000 cash bond. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 22nd.
