Las Vegas, Nevada — A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officer suffered minor injuries Wednesday night after being rear-ended while sitting inside a patrol car, according to officials. The crash occurred around 9:45 p.m. near Rainbow Boulevard and Endora Drive, just north of Flamingo Road.
Police said the officer had completed a vehicle stop for routine traffic violations and was inside the patrol vehicle finishing paperwork when a driver slammed into the rear of the unit.
Officer Taken to Hospital; Suspected DUI Driver Arrested
Following the collision, the injured officer was transported to UMC (University Medical Center) with minor injuries, LVMPD confirmed.
The driver who struck the patrol car was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, though officials have not yet released the suspect’s identity or additional details related to the arrest.
Authorities have not clarified whether speed, distraction, or impairment contributed to the severity of the impact, but emphasized that the investigation remains active.
Crash Highlights Dangers Faced by Officers During Routine Stops
Officials noted that incidents like Wednesday night’s crash underscore the ongoing risks law enforcement officers face even during what seem like standard traffic stops. When officers are parked roadside—often in dim lighting or busy traffic conditions—the risk of being struck by inattentive or impaired drivers increases significantly.
The Move Over Law in Nevada requires drivers to slow down or change lanes when passing emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road with lights activated. LVMPD frequently reminds the public that compliance can prevent serious injuries or fatalities.
No Additional Information Released
As of now, LVMPD has not released further details regarding the suspect, potential charges, or the exact circumstances leading to the crash. Updates are expected as the investigation continues.
