Ovid, NY — The body of a 35-year-old man was recovered from Cayuga Lake on Monday, Aug. 18, two days after his kayak capsized in upstate New York, authorities reported. The tragic incident has been classified as an accidental drowning.
Incident Occurred During Early Morning Kayak Trip
According to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, identified as Bo Soo Choi, also known as John Choi, and a friend went kayaking on Sunday, Aug. 17, around 1:30 a.m. Neither man was wearing a life jacket when their kayak overturned while attempting a turn.
“One male was able to be rescued by bystanders,” the sheriff’s office said. “Choi was unsuccessful in his attempt to get to shore.”

By approximately 1:45 a.m., multiple 911 calls were received reporting people in distress in the water. First responders, including deputies and firefighters, arrived near Sheldrake Point in Ovid, helping several individuals out of the lake. However, Choi remained unaccounted for, prompting an immediate search effort.
Multi-Agency Search Effort
A coordinated search-and-rescue operation involved drones, boats, and firefighters throughout the day. The search was temporarily suspended at night and resumed early on Monday, Aug. 18, at 6:30 a.m. At 11:15 a.m., Choi’s body was located approximately 70 feet below the water’s surface.

Choi, a resident of Flushing, Queens, tragically did not survive despite the rapid response from rescue personnel. His death has been classified as an accidental drowning.
Officials Emphasize Water Safety
In a press release, Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Thompson thanked the 17 agencies that participated in the search operation. He also highlighted the importance of water safety precautions.
“We remind everyone of the importance of life preservers and having a safety plan in place when out on the water,” Sheriff Thompson said.
