Kansas City, MO — A juvenile boy under the age of 16 died Tuesday afternoon after being shot while walking near East 88th Place and James A. Reed Road, according to police. The incident has added to the city’s growing homicide total for 2025.
Victim Rushed to Hospital
Kansas City police said they were dispatched to St. Luke’s Hospital around 2:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting victim. Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a department spokesperson, confirmed that the boy had been transported to the hospital by a friend after calling for help.
Despite life-saving efforts from medical staff, the boy was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
“He heard several sounds of shots and was struck by gunfire,” Gonzalez said in a press release.
Circumstances of the Shooting
The preliminary investigation revealed the boy had been walking outdoors when the gunfire erupted. Police have not yet determined whether the boy was specifically targeted or struck by stray bullets.
According to The Kansas City Star, the death marks the 109th homicide in Kansas City in 2025, compared to 108 at the same time last year. That total includes police-involved shootings.
