Franklin Township, NJ – A terrifying crash in Franklin Township turned into a life-saving rescue after 26-year-old Safwan Islam’s iPhone automatically alerted emergency services, allowing police to pull him from a burning vehicle just moments before it became fully engulfed in flames.
The incident occurred on November 9 along Route 27, where Islam’s car slammed into a tree after he reportedly suffered a medical episode, according to a report.
Driver Unconscious as Car Ignites
Still unconscious after the violent impact, Islam was unable to call for help — but his iPhone’s “Call After Severe Crash” safety feature detected the collision and automatically contacted 911 after a 20-second countdown.
That call may have saved his life.
Heroic Officers Arrive as Flames Spread
Dashcam footage captured the harrowing moment Officer Yash Shroff and Officer Thomas Sites arrived to find the vehicle already on fire. Without hesitation, the officers smashed the driver’s side window and pulled Islam out as flames inched dangerously close.

According to the South Brunswick Police Department, the officers’ actions were nothing short of extraordinary.
“This is a miracle by every aspect of the word miracle,” the department said. “As you can see in the video, it’s dramatic — the flames are leaping at their feet as they’re pulling him out. Within seconds, the car becomes fully engulfed. This is a Thanksgiving miracle.”
Victim Survives After Intense Crash and Surgery
Despite suffering severe injuries in the crash, including trauma to his back and neck, Islam underwent surgery and was able to return home on Tuesday, embracing his relieved family just days before the holiday.
His father, Naushad, expressed overwhelming gratitude toward the officers who saved his son’s life.
“I couldn’t say anything other than thank you,” he told NBC New York. “For them, it may be their everyday work. But for me, it’s getting back my son. I can’t thank them enough.”
Family Calls Recovery a Blessing
Naushad described the emotional toll of the uncertain hours following the crash.
“He’s doing well, he’s talking. When he was in the hospital, we weren’t sure how he was doing — it was really bad.”
He added that his son’s survival felt like “divine intervention.”
Crash Cause Still Under Investigation
Police in Franklin Township are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, though they believe a medical episode played a significant role in Islam losing control of his vehicle.
What remains clear is that a combination of technology and heroic police action prevented a tragic outcome.
