Intense Heat and Storm Threats Loom Over Metro Detroit; Hot and Humid Weekend Ahead

Detroit, MI – Metro Detroit is gearing up for a hot, muggy, and occasionally stormy weekend as temperatures rise and thunderstorms threaten to impact the region.

Friday’s Forecast:

The afternoon saw Southeast Michigan experiencing temperatures in the lower to mid-80s, providing a pleasant end to the workweek. The night is expected to be muggy, with lows in the mid-to-upper 60s. Winds will be light, coming from the south at around five mph, providing a calm evening.

Saturday: Hot and Humid Conditions Expected

The heat will intensify on Saturday, with afternoon temperatures reaching the lower 90s. However, the heat index, or real-feel temperatures, will soar to 95 degrees due to increased humidity. Although Friday brought noticeable humidity, it is forecast to become even more sticky on Saturday as reported.

For those planning outdoor activities, such as attending the Lions game at Ford Field, enjoying the Woodward Dream Cruise, or attending the AfroFuture Detroit or the Michigan Renaissance Festival near Holly, it’s important to pace yourself and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Storm Risk: Isolated Thunderstorms Possible

There is a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon and evening, particularly west of Interstate 75. Storms are expected to develop around 5-6 p.m., with the possibility of lingering until around midnight.

The severe weather risk is currently rated as “marginal” (level 1 of 5) across all of Southeast Michigan. However, areas west of I-75 will be most at risk for any stronger storms that may develop.

The same pattern of showers and thunderstorms is expected to repeat on Sunday afternoon and evening, with the main focus again being west of I-75. Be sure to keep an umbrella handy and stay tuned to the radar for any sudden weather changes.

Sunday Outlook: Hot and Muggy

Despite the chance for storms, Sunday will remain hot and muggy, with temperatures peaking in the mid-80s. Lows will dip to the mid-60s overnight. The chance of showers and thunderstorms will continue, but it won’t provide much relief from the humidity.

Tropical Storm Erin Update

Meanwhile, Hurricane Erin intensified into a Category 1 hurricane on Friday as it neared the Leeward Islands. Erin is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 by Saturday and potentially become a Category 4 by Saturday night or Sunday morning.

While the storm is forecast to pass north of the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico, its impact will still be felt along the East Coast, with tropical storm-force winds reaching areas like North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Dangerous rip currents and large waves are expected to affect parts of the coast by midweek.

Outlook for Early Next Week: Cooling Temperatures

Relief from the heat is expected to arrive early next week. Temperatures are forecast to dip back into the lower to mid-80s to start the workweek, bringing more comfortable and seasonable summer weather. Showers and some thunderstorms could linger into Monday and Tuesday, but cooler, more comfortable conditions will return by midweek.
