Huntington Beach, CA – A 49-year-old Huntington Beach man was taken into custody Thursday night following a violent assault and prolonged SWAT standoff, authorities confirmed. The incident began over a dispute regarding the towing of the suspect’s boat and escalated into a major police response.
Assault Leads to Hospitalization
Huntington Beach police officers were dispatched to a residence on the 5700 block of Edinger Avenue around 3:30 p.m. for a report of a fight in progress. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male victim with significant injuries, who was immediately transported to a local hospital. His condition has not been publicly disclosed.
Details about the victim’s role in the incident remain unclear, including whether he was the tow truck operator involved in the dispute over the boat.
Suspect Refuses to Surrender
According to authorities, the suspect, later identified as Zachary Romanak, 49, retreated into the residence and refused repeated police commands to exit. Crisis negotiators engaged with Romanak for several hours in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, but he remained uncooperative.
The standoff prompted a large-scale law enforcement response, including the SWAT team, Major Crimes Unit detectives, a drone team, and the Huntington Beach Fire Department, who all assisted in maintaining safety and monitoring the situation.
SWAT Intervention Ends Standoff
At approximately 9:15 p.m., after hours of unsuccessful negotiations, SWAT officers deployed specialty munitions into the residence. Shortly thereafter, Romanak exited the home and was taken into custody without incident.
Footage from the scene captured armored vehicles positioned near the home, officers in tactical gear, and Romanak being led away while the perimeter was secured.
Arrest and Investigation
Zachary Romanak, a resident of Huntington Beach, was booked into the Huntington Beach City Jail. Charges are pending as investigators continue to review the incident, collect evidence, and conduct interviews with witnesses.
Police confirmed that no firearm was used during the assault and have not released further details about the altercation, citing the ongoing investigation.

The Huntington Beach Police Department praised the coordination of multiple units during the standoff, emphasizing the importance of patience and negotiation in resolving potentially violent situations safely.
