High-Speed Corvette Chase in Columbus Leads to Fiery Wreck, Multiple Criminal Charges for Driver

COLUMBUS, Ga. – A high-speed police chase involving a C7 Corvette ended in a fiery crash and multiple criminal charges for Clifford George Castillo, according to the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office.

The Chase Incident

The chase began when Castillo allegedly fled from officers at triple-digit speeds in South Columbus. Police initially called off pursuit due to the extreme speed, but Castillo reportedly turned off his lights and continued driving recklessly.

The driver lost control at a roundabout on South Lumpkin Road, leaving the roadway and crashing into a surrounding forest. The Corvette caught fire, though Castillo and his passenger escaped without injury. Both attempted to flee on foot but were arrested by authorities shortly afterward.

Charges Facing Castillo

Castillo is now facing 20 charges, including:

  • Willful obstruction of law enforcement
  • Fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer
  • Speeding and reckless driving
  • Operating without required lights
  • Driving too fast for conditions
  • Aggressive driving
  • Failure to maintain lane

He is being held without bond, and his case has been turned over to the Superior Court.

Safety Reminder from Authorities

Sheriff Countryman used the incident as a cautionary tale, posting on social media:

“Make smarter choices, Muscogee County. Slow down. Save lives.”

This incident underscores the dangers of fleeing from law enforcement and driving recklessly, which can lead to serious injuries, loss of life, and devastating property damage.
