Malibu, CA – A stolen vehicle carrying three children was involved in a police pursuit that ended in a violent crash on the Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu on Friday evening, authorities reported.
The chase began shortly before 7 p.m. when the car was reportedly stolen in East Los Angeles. The suspect led California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers across town, eventually entering the PCH near Santa Monica.
Erratic Driving Leads to Multi-Vehicle Crash
During the pursuit, the suspect initially drove slowly, but the situation escalated after the vehicle appeared to hit a spike strip. Following the impact, the driver accelerated and began driving erratically, increasing the danger to both law enforcement and the public.
At approximately 7:35 p.m., the chase ended in a major collision near Point Dume Road when the suspect T-boned another vehicle, causing a multi-vehicle crash. Immediately after the crash, the suspect fled on foot, running up an embankment, through wooded areas, hopping over backyards, and climbing a barbed-wire fence.
Children and Other Victims Treated at the Scene
Officers quickly attended to the three children in the stolen vehicle, including one small child in a car seat. All three were reported to be conscious and breathing and were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Two other individuals in the vehicle that was T-boned were also treated for injuries at the scene.
Suspect Taken Into Custody
By 7:50 p.m., Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies captured the shirtless suspect in a nearby Malibu neighborhood. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or charges at this time as per ABC7.
Dangers of High-Speed Chases
Police chases, especially involving children as passengers, pose extreme risks. Authorities warn that high-speed pursuits can result in severe injuries, property damage, and endanger innocent bystanders. Officials recommend that motorists remain clear of chase routes whenever possible and allow law enforcement to handle pursuit situations.
Community Response and Safety Measures
Residents are reminded to report suspicious activity immediately and take precautions during emergencies. This incident highlights the importance of public awareness, timely law enforcement response, and child safety measures during critical incidents.
