Covington, GA – Two people were taken into custody after a high-speed chase on Interstate 20 westbound linked to a stolen lawnmower ended in a crash, leaving a Covington police officer injured, authorities said.
Chase Details
The pursuit began around 1 p.m. when officers spotted a U-Haul truck at The Home Depot on Highway 142. Investigators had connected the truck to the theft of a zero-turn mower from Ace Hardware.
When police attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled westbound on I-20, prompting a high-speed pursuit. Officers attempted a PIT maneuver twice unsuccessfully before the third attempt successfully stopped the vehicle.
Crash and Injuries
During the maneuver, the suspect’s truck struck a Covington police car, causing it to overturn. Lt. Chris Cain was taken to Piedmont Walton Hospital with minor injuries.
The suspect’s vehicle then crashed through a guardrail and into the woods, after which both the driver and passenger fled on foot, as reported.
Authorities temporarily shut down both directions of I-20 for cleanup and investigation.
Arrests and Law Enforcement Response
Both suspects were eventually arrested with assistance from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol.
Covington Interim Police Chief Brent Fuesting said:
“We’re grateful Lt. Cain’s injuries are not serious and that he is recovering well. We also appreciate the assistance of our law enforcement partners.”
Investigation Ongoing
Police confirmed that the investigation remains active. The identities of the two suspects who initially fled from the truck have not yet been released.
