South Bend, IN – A 56-year-old man, Deron Phillips of South Bend, was arrested after reportedly fleeing from police and jumping into the St. Joseph River on Monday afternoon. Authorities said the incident began when a South Bend Police officer observed Phillips committing a traffic violation near Lincoln Way West and Wilbur Street.
When the officer attempted to pull Phillips over, he refused to stop, leading to a brief high-speed chase through the city.
Jump into the River
The pursuit ended at the east end of the Colfax Avenue Bridge, where Phillips exited his vehicle and jumped into the river below. Emergency responders quickly rescued Phillips from the water and transported him to a hospital for evaluation.
Following the medical assessment, Phillips was taken into custody and is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail, awaiting formal charges.
