Green Lake County Teen Brothers Grow 838-Pound Pumpkin, Aim for 1,000 Next Year

Green Lake County, WI — Two determined brothers from Wisconsin have spent their spring and summer nurturing a dream that’s larger than life — growing a 1,000-pound pumpkin. Though they fell short this season, their massive 838-pound entry has earned them admiration across their community and a renewed determination for next year.

The Start of a Giant Journey

David and Nicholas Oft, teenage brothers from Green Lake County, have been working together for five years to master the art of growing giant pumpkins. Their journey began back in April, when they planted seeds gifted by their mother.

“My mother got me some seeds for Christmas and a membership to the Wisconsin Giant Pumpkin Growers Association,” said Nicholas.

Each season, the boys spend long hours weeding, watering, and monitoring their pumpkin patch, battling unpredictable Wisconsin weather to keep their plants healthy.

Tending the Patch Through Summer

The Oft brothers’ routine includes daily maintenance, especially in the early stages when the plants are vulnerable to weeds.

“When the pumpkin is starting out, if you let the weeds get out of control it will just choke the plant out,” David explained.

Their commitment stretches from early spring through late summer, when the pumpkins reach their peak size. The family now works as a team, ensuring the massive gourds receive the attention they need.

According to WMTV 15 News, the brothers’ latest pumpkin — affectionately named “Caleb” after the person who sold them the seeds — tipped the scales at 838 pounds.

A Family Passion and a Growing Community

What began as a small backyard hobby has blossomed into a full family project. Their parents and siblings now help with soil preparation, irrigation, and even moving the enormous pumpkins when harvest time arrives.

Naming each pumpkin has become part of their tradition — a fun way to honor the people who’ve supported their growing passion. While they haven’t yet reached their 1,000-pound milestone, the brothers are taking it as motivation to keep pushing forward.

“We didn’t quite hit our goal this year, but we’re already planning how to get there next season,” Nicholas said.

Growing Wisconsin’s Next Big Thing

Giant pumpkin growing has a strong following across Wisconsin, especially among members of the Wisconsin Giant Pumpkin Growers Association, which provides guidance, seeds, and competitions for enthusiasts.

Experts say these pumpkins require special genetics, careful feeding schedules, and controlled watering, making them one of the most challenging — yet rewarding — crops to cultivate.

Green Lake County, located about 30 miles northwest of Fond du Lac, is becoming known for its community of growers who take pride in agricultural achievements like the Oft brothers’ efforts.

The boys plan to continue experimenting with new soil blends and fertilizer techniques as they set their sights on the elusive 1,000-pound mark next year.
