Georgia Woman Severely Burned in Random Park Attack; Suspect Remains at Large

Savannah, GA – A 46-year-old Georgia woman suffered life-threatening burns after being doused with a toxic chemical in a random attack while walking through Forsyth Park in Savannah, authorities confirmed.

The attack, which occurred Wednesday night, left the victim hospitalized with extensive injuries and has prompted an urgent investigation by local police and the FBI.

Victim Attacked While Walking in Park

Ashley Wasielewski was walking laps around Forsyth Park after attending a Christmas program at a nearby church when an unknown assailant approached her from behind. The perpetrator poured a corrosive liquid over her head, immediately causing intense pain and burning to her skin.

Witnesses and friends described the scene as horrifying. Connor Milam, a close friend, recounted that Wasielewski screamed as the chemical ate through her clothing and even melted her car’s key fob.

“She looked down and her pants were starting to burn off her body. She started screaming. They didn’t rob her. They didn’t take anything from her. This was a random person in the park who went out of their way to disfigure another human being,” Milam said.

Hospitalized With Severe Burns

Wasielewski was immediately transported to the Augusta Burn Center, where she is being treated for second- and third-degree burns covering roughly half her body, including her face, scalp, hands, and legs, according to her son, Westley Wasielewski.

Westley described learning of the attack from a Good Samaritan who came to his mother’s aid, recounting that he could hear her wailing in agony over the phone.

“We don’t know who did it. She doesn’t have any enemies. She is a friend to everyone,” he said.

Suspect Still at Large

No arrests have been made as Savannah police, working closely with the FBI, attempt to identify the chemical used and locate the assailant. Extra patrols have been deployed to city parks to ensure public safety.

Authorities are seeking a person of interest last seen on surveillance footage wearing blue jeans and a dark hooded sweatshirt featuring a white cartoon rabbit.

City Officials Respond

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson addressed the attack on Facebook, emphasizing the seriousness of the case.

“Our Police Department is treating this case with the highest urgency. While this attack is deeply troubling, there is currently no information indicating a broader or ongoing threat to the public,” the mayor said.

The random nature of the attack has left the community shaken. Friends describe Wasielewski as a generous community volunteer who often helps the homeless and is widely respected in the area.

Community Urged to Stay Vigilant

Police encourage anyone with information regarding the attack or the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward. Residents are advised to exercise caution when visiting public parks, especially after dark.
