Georgia Woman Arrested after Police Seized 55 Pounds of Fentanyl from Car; Child also Rescued

Gwinnett County, GA – A Gwinnett County woman, Celia Lara-Rios, 34, accused of trafficking a massive amount of fentanyl, will remain in jail after her attorney withdrew a request for bond, authorities reported.

Arrest and Fentanyl Seizure

Lara-Rios was arrested in July 2025 by Auburn police, who found nearly 25 kilograms (about 55 pounds) of fentanyl in her vehicle. Prosecutors allege she has ties to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful drug organizations.

Her arrest warrant states that Lara-Rios knowingly possessed more than 24,958 grams of fentanyl, an amount that could potentially kill more than 12 million people, with as little as two milligrams proving fatal.

Authorities also reported that a child was in the car when Lara-Rios was taken into custody.

Charges Filed

Lara-Rios faces two felony charges:

  • Trafficking in morphine, opium, or heroin in excess of 28 grams
  • Using a communication facility in the commission of a felony involving controlled substances

Fox5Atlanta reported that she is currently being held at the Gwinnett County Jail under an ICE detainer.

Significance of the Bust

Authorities described the arrest as one of the largest fentanyl seizures in Georgia, highlighting ongoing concerns over fentanyl trafficking and public safety.

Next Steps

It is unclear whether the seized fentanyl was pure or mixed with other substances.

Lara-Rios had a bond hearing scheduled for Tuesday, but it was waived. Her next court appearance has not yet been announced.
