Georgia Troopers Report Nearly 300 DUI Arrests Over Holiday Weekend

Atlanta, GA — Georgia officials released updated safety numbers for the holiday weekend, reporting nearly 300 arrests for driving under the influence on the state’s roads and waterways. The data highlights a troubling trend as troopers continue to battle impaired and distracted driving.

Road Safety Concerns

According to the Georgia State Patrol, troopers arrested 254 people for DUI across the state this weekend. Officers also issued:

  • 221 citations for distracted driving
  • 357 seat belt violations

The department confirmed 108 crashes, which led to three deaths and 35 injuries. Of those crashes, 15 involved impaired drivers and five involved commercial vehicles.

“Every one of these numbers represents a life at risk, and our focus remains on keeping Georgia’s roads safe,” state patrol officials said.

Boating Incidents

On the water, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported seven boating under the influence (BUI) arrests as of 11:59 p.m. Saturday. Encouragingly, no boating-related injuries or fatalities were reported.

Officials detailed that the majority of BUI arrests occurred on major Georgia lakes:

  • Lake Lanier: 4 arrests
  • Lake Allatoona: 1 arrest
  • Lake Sinclair: 1 arrest

The figures were released in a joint update by the Department of Public Safety and Department of Natural Resources, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.

A Persistent Problem

Holiday weekends are historically dangerous periods on Georgia’s highways and lakes. Authorities say alcohol-related crashes, impaired boating, and distracted driving are among the leading factors behind injuries and fatalities.

Officials continue to urge drivers and boaters to act responsibly.

“Impaired or distracted decisions don’t just affect you,” one trooper explained. “They put your passengers, other drivers, and families at risk.”

Safety Reminders for Travelers

Authorities recommend several steps to stay safe during holiday weekends:

  • Plan ahead: Use ride-sharing or designated drivers if drinking.
  • Avoid distractions: Put phones away while behind the wheel.
  • Wear seat belts: Simple compliance prevents severe injuries.
  • Stay alert on the water: Never boat under the influence, and always use life jackets.

Looking Ahead

Georgia law enforcement agencies say they will continue strict enforcement throughout the holiday period. With increased patrols on both highways and waterways, officials hope to reduce the toll of preventable tragedies.
