Fullerton, CA – A dramatic early-morning incident in Fullerton, California, ended with a suspected DUI driver soaked, injured, and in police custody after crashing into a fire hydrant and attempting to flee the scene on Sunday morning.
Local authorities say the unusual crash unfolded when a driver lost control of a vehicle, setting off a chain of events that quickly drew police attention—and a trail of water that made escape nearly impossible.
Crash Sends Water Shooting Into the Air
According to the Fullerton Police Department, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, when a white sedan slammed directly into a fire hydrant, causing water to erupt forcefully into the air. Officers described the scene as chaotic, with water flooding the area almost instantly.
In a lighthearted social media post, police humorously compared the gushing hydrant to “Old Faithful,” joking that turning a hydrant into a geyser is rarely a sign that things are going well.
After striking the hydrant, authorities say the vehicle continued moving and crashed into a pole at a nearby shopping center, causing additional damage before coming to a stop.
Witness Helps Police Track the Suspect
When the first officer arrived at the scene, a witness offered what police later described as “solid detective advice.”
The witness reportedly told officers to “follow the water trail,” pointing out that the suspect had been thoroughly drenched during the crash. That observation quickly proved useful.
Officers followed the trail of water leading away from the crash site and soon located the soaking-wet suspect nearby.
Foot Chase Captured on Body Camera
Police body-worn camera footage shows officers attempting to detain the individual, who then attempted to flee on foot. A brief foot pursuit followed before officers were able to catch and arrest the suspect.
The pursuit did not last long, and no officers were injured during the arrest, according to police.
Suspect Taken to Hospital With Minor Injuries
Following the arrest, authorities transported the individual to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries sustained during the crash. After receiving medical clearance, the suspect was taken into custody.
Police later confirmed that the individual was booked on suspicion of DUI as well as hit-and-run, citing the driver’s attempt to leave the scene following the collision.
The suspect’s name, age, and additional identifying details were not immediately released.
While the Fullerton Police Department used humor in their online post, officials emphasized that driving under the influence is a serious offense that puts lives at risk.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities did not confirm whether alcohol, drugs, or both were suspected factors in the crash, stating that the investigation remains ongoing. Additional charges could be filed depending on the results of toxicology tests and further review.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is encouraged to contact the Fullerton Police Department.
