Tucson, Arizona — An Arizona man, identified as Jaden Alfredo Covarrubias, has been sentenced to prison after investigators determined he had been selling fruit-flavored cocaine through various social media platforms, including WhatsApp. According to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, Covarrubias “knowingly solicited another person to possess approximately 1.55 pounds of cocaine for sale” in Pima County on July 17.

Authorities revealed that Covarrubias had promoted coconut, strawberry, and banana-flavored cocaine, a disturbing trend that officials believe is being used to attract younger and more vulnerable users.

On November 24, Covarrubias received a sentence of 1.75 years in prison. The court also ordered him to pay $4,500 to the Arizona Anti-Racketeering Revolving Fund, along with $300 to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes emphasized her office’s ongoing efforts, stating, “My office will continue to hold accountable those illegally trafficking and selling drugs in our communities.”

Officials Warn of Dangerous Trend Targeting Young Users

Following the sentencing, Attorney General Mayes issued a consumer alert regarding the rise of fruit-flavored cocaine in illegal drug markets across the state. She warned that Mexican drug cartels are actively attempting to “expand their business outside of traditional male buyers” by offering flavors believed to appeal to women and younger individuals.

During an interview, Mayes explained, “The notion is young women are more attracted to fruity flavors. The Mexican drug cartels are trying to expand their business outside of the traditional men by selling this flavored cocaine.”

Her office noted that dealers have started promoting flavors such as pina colada, strawberry, coconut, and banana, creating a sense of novelty that masks the severe risks associated with cocaine use.

Growing Concerns Over Fentanyl-Laced Products

A major component of the consumer alert focuses on the high likelihood that street-purchased drugs—including flavored varieties—could be contaminated with deadly fentanyl.

The Attorney General’s Office stated, “Any illegal drug that you obtain online or on the street may contain fentanyl and has the potential to kill.”

This warning follows ongoing national concerns about fentanyl-related overdoses, which continue to impact communities across the country. Officials urge parents, educators, and community members to stay vigilant and speak openly with young people about the dangers of purchasing or experimenting with illicit substances.

State Leaders Encourage Education and Prevention

As flavored cocaine begins surfacing more frequently in illegal markets, Arizona officials stress the need for awareness and prevention. Attorney General Mayes urged residents to prioritize safety and remain informed, stating, “We want everyone to stay safe and avoid the harms that come from using illegal drugs.”

Local authorities are encouraging anyone who comes across suspicious drug-related activity—especially online sales—to contact law enforcement immediately. With cartels and dealers evolving their strategies, officials want the public to understand that the seemingly harmless “flavors” are just another tool used to attract potential new users.
