Des Moines, Iowa — After several days of frigid temperatures, Iowa residents can expect a temporary warm-up as the high pressure system currently dominating the state shifts eastward. Temperatures are forecast to climb into the mid-30s by Friday, bringing a break from the bitter cold and allowing some of the snow from last weekend to start melting.
Friday will feature sunny skies in most areas, providing a welcome respite for Iowans who have endured bitter temperatures over the past week. While some melting is expected, meteorologists caution that winter is far from over, as another snow system approaches the state.
Snow Returns Saturday Into Sunday
A low-pressure system will move into Iowa on Saturday, bringing snow showers across the state Saturday evening into Sunday. The heaviest snowfall is expected in north central Iowa, where residents could see 4-6 inches of snow. Central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro area, is forecast to receive 2-4 inches, while far southern portions, including Centerville, Lamoni, and Clarinda, may see a light dusting up to 2 inches.
Snow is expected to move out early Sunday, but chillier air will return, keeping highs in the upper teens for the day. Residents should plan accordingly, as road conditions may become hazardous, especially in areas receiving heavier snow totals.
Cold Return and Midweek Outlook
After Sunday, a frigid high-pressure system from Canada is set to bring another cold start on Monday, with morning lows in the single digits across much of the state. Following this, a quick-moving clipper system could bring additional snow to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, though its path and timing remain uncertain. Forecasters warn that adjustments to the midweek forecast are likely as more data becomes available.
Temperatures are expected to rebound above freezing by Tuesday or Wednesday, which may help melt snow accumulations and provide a brief reprieve from ongoing winter conditions. However, Iowans should be prepared for continued wintry weather patterns through next week.
