Cadogan Township, PA – A western Pennsylvania woman has been charged with criminal homicide, involuntary manslaughter, and multiple counts of abuse of a corpse after the remains of her four infants were discovered in a home she had been evicted from last month.
Discovery of the Remains
Authorities say 39-year-old Jessica Marie Mauthe was arrested after her former landlord contacted police regarding the home she had lived in outside Ford City, approximately 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
State police reported that the first remains were found in a bedroom closet on Oak Avenue in Cadogan Township on September 13. The landlord noticed a trash bag emitting a foul odor and discovered something wrapped in towels that had begun decomposing.
Further investigation uncovered the remains of three other infants in the attic, stored in tote bags, wrapped in towels, and placed inside plastic bags, according to police.
Suspect’s Statements
In interviews with investigators, Mauthe admitted to giving birth to a child about a year ago. She told authorities the newborn made noises before she held it against her until it stopped breathing.
She also recounted the death of another newborn approximately six years ago, describing how the infant whimpered after birth. Mauthe said she passed out on the floor and, upon waking, found the baby beneath her and no longer breathing.
Charges and Jail
Mauthe is currently held in the Armstrong County Jail without bail. She faces the following charges:
- Criminal homicide for the death that occurred about a year ago
- Involuntary manslaughter for the death about six years ago
- Four counts each of concealing the death of a child and abuse of a corpse
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week, according to the reports.
