Florida Mother on Trial, Facing Death Penalty in 3-Year-Old Son’s Death

Viera, FL — A Brevard County mother is standing trial this week, accused of murdering her 3-year-old son, Jameson Nance, in 2021. Prosecutors say the toddler endured weeks of brutal abuse before his body finally gave out.

Authorities allege that Erica Dotson, the child’s mother, was directly involved in the abuse that led to Jameson’s death. Dotson, who was a Certified Nursing Assistant at Health First and a community college student at the time, insists she was not the one harming her son and claims her boyfriend, Joshua Manns, is responsible.

Charges Dotson Faces

Dotson has been charged with:

  • First-degree felony murder
  • Aggravated manslaughter of a child
  • Aggravated child abuse
  • Felony child abuse

If convicted, prosecutors have confirmed they will seek the death penalty against her. Manns is also facing his own murder charge in connection with the case.

The Backstory

In June 2021, West Melbourne Police were called to an apartment complex off U.S. 192 on what was initially reported as a drowning incident. Dotson told officers she had come home from work to find Jameson unresponsive and claimed Manns had said the boy drowned.

But investigators quickly grew suspicious. Jameson’s body was covered in bruises on his face and chest. The medical examiner later ruled his death as “battered child syndrome,” concluding he had been subjected to ongoing abuse for weeks before his body failed.

According to FOX 35 News, court documents show that text messages and photos found on Dotson’s phone allegedly detailed abusive incidents and suggested she hid Jameson from daycare and the public in the weeks leading up to his death.

Opening Statements in Trial

On the first day of the trial, a 15-person jury heard opening statements from both the prosecution and the defense.

Prosecutors argued that Dotson not only participated in the abuse but also invented stories to cover it up and even coached her son on what to say so others wouldn’t suspect.

The defense painted Dotson as a busy working mother and student who relied on her boyfriend’s explanations for Jameson’s injuries. Her attorneys claimed Manns spent more time with Jameson and was the one truly responsible for the abuse.

Emotional Testimony from Jameson’s Father

During testimony, Jameson’s biological father told jurors that he had been prevented from seeing his son after separating from Dotson, saying she and her boyfriend refused to allow visitation. He shared how the devastating loss pushed him into substance abuse, which he has since overcome through rehab.

Investigators, first responders, and one of Jameson’s pediatricians also testified on the opening day, providing critical details about the child’s injuries and medical history.

What’s Next in the Trial

The trial is expected to last around a month. If Dotson is found guilty, the same jury will then hear additional arguments to determine whether she should receive the death penalty.

For now, the court continues to hear from witnesses as prosecutors attempt to prove that Jameson’s death was the result of weeks of abuse at the hands of his own mother, while her defense maintains she was deceived and unaware of the full extent of Manns’ actions.
