Madeira Beach, Florida – A 48-year-old New York man has been charged after a jet ski accident in Madeira Beach, Florida, left two children, ages 7 and 8, injured, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Details of the Incident
The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday near Johns Pass, while Daniel Grubert from Piermont, N.Y., was allegedly operating a rented 2024 Yamaha WaveRunner. Grubert was reportedly racing a friend when he ditched his jet ski, causing it to collide with another rider carrying the two children.
According to the arrest affidavit, Grubert admitted to drinking one can of Twisted Tea Hard Iced Tea prior to the incident. As per reports, the affidavit states:
“He admitted to drinking a single Twisted Tea.”
Grubert was racing an acquaintance on another Yamaha WaveRunner and, while looking behind him, failed to see a jet ski in front operated by 45-year-old Walter Wodzien. All three riders, including the two children, were ejected from the watercraft during the collision.
Injuries and Emergency Response
The Madeira Beach Fire Department recovered the victims and transported them to a local hospital. One child sustained life-threatening injuries and experienced a near-drowning, while the other child suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Wodzien was unharmed, according to investigators.
Arrest and Investigation
Investigators from the Pinellas County Marine Unit and the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) reported that Grubert displayed signs of impairment, including odor of alcohol, red eyes, and slurred speech. Field sobriety tests indicated poor performance, leading to his arrest at the scene.
Grubert faces:
- Two counts of BUI causing serious bodily injury
- One count of reckless operation of a vessel
He remains detained at the Pinellas County Jail as authorities continue their investigation.
