Flash Flood Watches Issued as Southern California Faces Rare October Storm

Los Angeles, California – An early-season storm is expected to sweep across Southern California from late Monday through Tuesday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for hail, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Storm System Details

The storm system, moving in from the Pacific Northwest, is forecast to bring gusty winds to Santa Barbara County as early as Sunday night, before tracking south through Tuesday morning and then moving eastward across the region.

“This cold and dynamic system will bring increasing south winds to much of the area, unseasonably low snow levels around 6,000 feet, rainfall totals ranging from 0.75 inch to 3.5 inches, and widespread thunderstorm chances,” the NWS stated.

Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Risk

Forecasters warn of the potential for strong thunderstorms, heavy downpours, gusty winds, and hail across parts of the region.

  • Coastal and valley areas: 0.75 to 1.5 inches of rainfall expected
  • Mountains and foothills: 1.5 to 3.5 inches of rainfall possible

Flash Flood and Burn Scar Warnings

Flash flood watches have been issued for recent burn scar areas, where intense rainfall could trigger mudslides and debris flows. Meteorologists caution residents in these zones to remain alert as flooding risks increase during periods of heavy rain.

One of the Strongest October Storms in a Decade

Weather expert Colin McCarthy from U.S. Storm Watch described it as potentially the most significant October storm in 10 years, adding that it could officially end California’s fire season across much of the state.

Temperature and Weather Outlook

For Los Angeles, temperatures are forecast to dip as low as 51°F, with daytime highs reaching around 70°F through Wednesday.

Dryer and warmer conditions are expected to return from Thursday through Saturday, offering a brief reprieve after the storm passes.
