Orlando, FL – A five-vehicle crash along Florida’s Turnpike Friday evening left a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper and a driver in the hospital with minor injuries, authorities confirmed.
The Crash
The incident occurred around 5:26 p.m. in the northbound lanes near State Road 417. A semi-truck with a trailer traveling southbound sideswiped another car while changing lanes, setting off a chain reaction.
A car behind these vehicles swerved, collided with the other car, and went across the highway, overturning and striking the top of a parked FHP patrol vehicle.
“When the crashes occurred, our trooper was standing outside of his patrol car,” the FHP release states. “He darted away, briefly fell, and was later transported to the hospital with minor injuries.”
Vehicle Damage and Driver Injuries
The overturned car continued rolling, hitting a concrete barrier and coming to rest in an embankment. The driver was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The impact pushed the patrol car into the travel lanes, causing it to collide with a fifth vehicle. The remaining drivers suffered no injuries and stayed at the scene, as reported.
Investigation
The FHP said the crash remains under investigation, and no additional details have been released.
