San Jose, CA – Five men were arrested after police discovered large quantities of hallucinogenic mushrooms, cannabis, and nitrous oxide during raids at multiple San Jose smoke shops, authorities announced Monday.
The operation took place on August 6, when officers executed search warrants at four businesses following complaints from community members and a city councilmember about alleged illegal activities.
Four Smoke Shops Targeted
The businesses searched were identified as Grizzly’s Smoke Shop, E. Side Smoke Shop, JT’s Smoke Shop, and McKee Smoke Shop. These locations, spread across different parts of the city, were suspected of selling controlled substances and operating without proper licensing.
What Police Found
As per KTVU, officers seized the following during the search –
- 74 pounds of cannabis products
- 40 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms
- 426 cylinders of nitrous oxide
- $11,000 in cash
- One firearm
Police said the combination of seized items demonstrated the shops were actively involved in the sale of illegal drugs under the cover of legitimate retail operations.
Arrests and Citations
Out of the five men arrested, two were booked into county jail, while three received citations for drug-related offenses. In addition, both business and property owners will face citations for selling cannabis without the required licenses.
Police Chief Paul Joseph issued a strong warning to those conducting similar operations, stating,
“If you sell illegal drugs under the cover of a retail counter, we will find you. If you think a ‘Smoke Shop’ sign makes you untouchable, it doesn’t.”
The names of the arrested individuals have not yet been released.

Law enforcement officials say these enforcement actions are crucial to protecting public safety. Illegal sales of hallucinogens and unregulated cannabis products pose health risks, while nitrous oxide misuse can cause serious injury or death.
