Lake County, FL — The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of an 18-year-old woman on Saturday night. The collision occurred on the Florida Turnpike in Lake County, involving an SUV and a 2024 Hino tow truck.
Troopers confirmed that the crash happened around 9:44 p.m., near Mile Marker 291, as both vehicles were traveling southbound.
According to the official crash report, the young woman — from Southwest Ranches, Florida — had been driving a 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E in the outside lane of the Turnpike just before the fatal impact.
Tow Truck Merging into Traffic
FHP investigators say a 53-year-old man from Ocala was driving the tow truck, positioned partially in the outside lane and partially on the outside shoulder. As he attempted to merge from the shoulder fully into the lane, the Ford SUV struck the rear of his truck.
The front end of the Ford took the brunt of the impact. The 18-year-old driver suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, despite emergency response efforts.
Troopers said the tow truck driver remained at the crash site and was not injured. He fully cooperated with investigators, as per ClickOrlando.
Seat Belts were Worn
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the FHP crash report. Even with proper restraint, the severity and positioning of the collision left the teenager with no chance of survival, highlighting how dangerous high-speed roadways can be even when safety measures are followed.
Authorities have not yet released the young woman’s name, pending notification of next of kin.
