Cornelius, OR – A heroic father in Cornelius, Oregon prevented a potential tragedy just days before Christmas when a man attempted to kidnap his child from a stroller inside a Walmart, authorities report. The incident, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on December 21, has left the community shaken and grateful for the father’s quick actions.
Attempted Kidnapping at Walmart
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the events unfolded at the Walmart located at 220 N. Adair Street, roughly 25 miles west of Portland. Deputies responded after reports that a man tried to seize a child from a stroller while the family shopped.
Officials said the child’s father immediately intervened, wrestling with the would-be kidnapper to protect his child. During the struggle, the suspect allegedly pulled out a knife, though he eventually dropped the weapon before fleeing the scene in a white Jeep. The father sustained minor injuries in the encounter.
Suspect Identified and Taken Into Custody
Witnesses at the scene recorded the vehicle’s license plate, which helped deputies locate it a short distance away. The vehicle’s owner, 37-year-old Denis Villalobos, was identified as the suspected kidnapper and was taken into custody without further incident.
A grand jury has since indicted Villalobos on multiple charges, including:
- Attempted kidnapping
- Assault
- Unlawful use of a weapon
- Menacing
Surveillance cameras inside the store captured the incident, as well as the moments leading up to the confrontation.
Authorities Describe Disturbing Behavior
Washington County Sheriff’s Cpl. David Huey told local media that Villalobos appeared to have stalked the family prior to the attempted abduction.
“He looks like he’s staring at the child as the family walks by. And they don’t even know who he is,” Huey said. “It’s almost as if the suspect was stalking them in a sense.”
Family Reacts to Near-Tragedy
The child’s mother described the frightening experience in an interview with local CBS affiliate KOIN.
“It’s kind of scary,” she said. “Especially the fact that he lives around this neighborhood. It’s actually nice to live in a small community where we have the police department nearby doing their job. We’re very thankful for that.”
Authorities praised the father for his quick thinking and bravery, which prevented the incident from turning deadly.
Suspect Awaiting Court Appearance
Denis Villalobos remains in the Washington County Jail and is scheduled to appear before a judge on Monday. Investigators continue to review evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, as the case moves forward.
