Father Allegedly Drank Before Causing Crash that Killed His Son in Muncie; Facing Charges

Muncie, IN – A tragic single-vehicle crash in Delaware County has led to felony charges against Michael Wihebrink, 40, after the death of his son. The incident occurred on Dec. 4, 2024, shortly before 4 a.m., at the intersection of South 419 East and East 650 South, when a Chevy Malibu veered off the roadway into a wooded ditch and collided with a tree.

Four occupants were in the vehicle, including Wihebrink and his son. While two were transported by ambulance, Wihebrink’s son and another passenger were airlifted to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Tragically, Wihebrink’s son later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Charges Filed

On Thursday, authorities charged Wihebrink with:

  • Causing death when operating a vehicle while intoxicated – Level 4 felony
  • Two counts of causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle while intoxicated – Level 5 felony
  • Four counts of criminal recklessness – Felony

If convicted of the Level 4 felony, Wihebrink faces up to 12 years in prison.

Witness Accounts and Investigation

Court documents reveal that witnesses said Wihebrink and the other passengers had visited Big Shots Bar before the crash. Wihebrink allegedly consumed two pitchers of beer and a bottle of beer prior to driving. Survivors reportedly questioned his ability to drive before leaving the bar around 3 a.m.

According to one survivor, Wihebrink sped “super super fast” along the reservoir before the crash. When questioned by police, Wihebrink denied drinking at the bar, claiming he had been at home and that his son had insisted on driving as per Fox59.

Investigators noted that his account did not align with witness statements or physical evidence from the vehicle, including injuries consistent with the driver’s seat.

Arrest and Next Steps

A warrant for Wihebrink’s arrest was issued the day after charges were filed. He was taken into custody three days later. Authorities continue their investigation into the fatal crash, which has devastated the Muncie community.
