Fatal Aurora Crash follows High-Speed Chase; Suspect Facing Charges after 25-Year-Old Killed

Aurora, CO – The Aurora Police Department (APD) arrested a man on felony charges Thursday after a high-speed chase ended in a fatal crash that killed another driver.

Suspect and Charges

The suspect, Don Mai Phan, 25, of Aurora, was booked into the Aurora Municipal Detention Center around 7 p.m. Thursday. He faces:

  • Felony charges: Vehicular homicide and vehicular eluding
  • Misdemeanor charges: Reckless driving and speeding

The charges stem from a crash that occurred at the intersection of East Iliff Avenue and South Blackhawk Street Thursday afternoon.

Crash Details

The victim, a 25-year-old male driver of a Honda sedan, was making a left turn onto Iliff Avenue when Phan allegedly ran a red light, colliding with the vehicle. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Denver Gazette.

The incident began around 2 p.m. Thursday when an Aurora police officer observed a white BMW sedan traveling at approximately 84 mph in a 65 mph zone on northbound Interstate 225.

Phan allegedly refused to stop, exited the highway at East Iliff Avenue, and continued eastbound, eventually running a red light at South Blackhawk Street and striking the Honda sedan.

Arrest and Injuries

A motorcycle officer arrived about 30 seconds later and detained Phan along with a 26-year-old male passenger in the BMW. Both were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Debris from the crash struck two additional vehicles stopped at the intersection, but no other injuries were reported.

Victim Identification

The victim’s identity will be confirmed by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office following autopsy and family notification.
