One lawsuit is against Nancy Lanza estate, a second lawsuit is against the gun manufacturer, Remington Outdoor Co., distributor of the Bushmaster (the type of gun used in the crime) and a third is against the Town of Newtown.

Two separate lawsuits were filed this past January against the estate of Nancy Lanza, by eight of the 26 families of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre, an incident that occurred in 2012.
Nancy Lanza is the mother of Adam Lanza, the individual that killed his own mother Nancy in her home, then drove to the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012, and killed 20 first-graders and six adults. One of the weapons he used in the massacre was a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle.
A lawsuit was filed by Bridgeport attorney Joshua Koskoff in Superior Court in Bridgeport. The plaintiffs in one lawsuit are:
–the family of child victims Benjamin Wheeler, Dylan Hockley, Daniel Barden
— the family of four educators killed, Rachel D’Avino, Mary Scherlach, Victoria Soto, Lauren Rousseau
— the family of two teachers who were injured, Natalie Hammond and Deborah Pisani
A lawsuit was filed in Danbury by Stamford attorney Angelo Ziotas. The plaintiff in that lawsuit is:
–the family of child victim James Mattioli
The lawsuits allege:
–Nancy Lanza’s 20-year-old son, Adam Lanza, had unlimited access to the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle she purchased and kept in her home, one of the weapons used in the crime.
–Nancy Lanza failed to properly secure her own firearm that she legally owned.
–this gun was a strong factor leading to the deaths in the massacre.
–Nancy Lanza knew, or should have known, that her son Adam’s mental and emotional condition made him a danger to others.
Stamford attorney Samuel Starks is the administrator of Nancy Lanza’s estate. He claims that the estate of Nancy Lanza is estimated to be worth $64,000. There could also be as much as $1 million to $1.5 million in insurance on her home that the victim’s families could also seek.
The Lanza home, located at 36 Yogananda Street in Newtown, CT, was once assessed at $523,000, but the town plans to demolish the home. The Nancy Lanza home was bought from her estate for $1 by Newtown officials and they voted to tear it down last January. A local company, Manafort Brothers, has offered to demolish the Lanza home for free, to honor the 26 students and school staff members killed in the massacre, according to First Selectwoman Pat Llodra.
Other federal court lawsuits are by some of the same families, against the Remington Outdoor Co., distributor of the Bushmaster. The lawsuit claims that this firearm is a military assault weapon and the public should not have access to it due to the fact that it can fire up to 30 rounds a minute and can pierce body armor.
In another lawsuit the Town of Newtown is being sued. The lawsuit alleges that the town did not secure the school properly and that substitute teacher Rousseau was unable to lock the classroom door because she did not have a key.
The lawyer that represents Nancy Lanza’s estate, Attorney John Majewski, wants to have the lawsuit cases consolidated into one.
A Bridgeport Superior Court judge has set a status conference on the eight lawsuits, for April 9.
