Palm Beach, FL – A Florida woman has been arrested and charged with first-degree premeditated murder after allegedly suffocating her 97-year-old mother, authorities reported. The elderly victim, Patricia Blake, suffered from Parkinson’s disease and a thyroid disorder and was found dead at her family home in Palm Beach.
Tragic Discovery on Christmas Night
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Blake residence following a report of Patricia’s death. Her daughter, 66-year-old Martha Jo Blake, told law enforcement she last saw her mother alive around 10 p.m. on Christmas Day.
An autopsy revealed that Patricia’s injuries, including a broken neck and eye hemorrhaging consistent with suffocation, were indicative of homicide. Authorities noted that her skin was tinted purple around the nose, suggesting something was placed on her face before or during her death.
Evidence Leads to Arrest
A deputy reviewing body camera footage from the initial response noticed a quarter-sized red mark on the side of Patricia’s neck. Using this observation, deputies obtained a search warrant and tracked down Martha Jo, who was reportedly still at the family home with friends.
During questioning, Martha Jo allegedly confessed that she and Patricia had been discussing “death with dignity” for about a year and a half. According to authorities, Patricia’s doctor in Maine denied their request for physician-assisted suicide.
Under Maine law, assisted suicide is only permitted for individuals with a terminal illness and a six-month prognosis. Parkinson’s disease, while life-altering and potentially contributing to fatal complications, does not meet the legal definition of a terminal illness in the state.

Martha Jo reportedly told deputies that she and her mother had explored alternatives, including suicide by pills, but abandoned the idea because they did not have access to lethal substances.
While executing the search warrant at the Palm Beach home, deputies discovered a pair of white calf-length socks in a shopping bag inside a garbage bag on the front porch, which was collected as evidence in the case.
