Putnam County, GA – A tragic car accident in Putnam County claimed the lives of an elderly couple on Wednesday afternoon, officials confirmed.
Details of the Crash
According to Putnam County Coroner Hollis Harrison, the crash occurred around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 16 (Sparta Highway) and Pea Ridge Road.
Harrison reported that a Georgia Power truck, driven by 26-year-old Matthew Crumbley, was traveling east on Pea Ridge Road and turned in front of the couple’s vehicle on Highway 16, causing a collision.
The couple, Sara Abbott, 81, who was driving, and her husband James Abbott, 83, who was a passenger, were seriously injured. James died at the scene, while Sara was transported by ambulance and prepared to be airlifted to a hospital. Tragically, she passed away before being loaded onto the helicopter, Harrison said.
Potential Charges
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Crumbley is expected to face charges including:
- Homicide by vehicle in the second degree
- Failure to yield when turning left
Sheriff Chief Russell Blenk noted that Crumbley has not yet been formally charged, and therefore his mugshot is not available. Crumbley was taken to the hospital from the scene for treatment.
Blenk added that all anticipated charges are misdemeanors, pending the formal filing of charges.
