Driver Dies after Greenwood Pond Crash; Officer and Firefighter Injured During Rescue

Greenwood, IN — A driver was killed Tuesday afternoon after crashing into a pond in Greenwood, while a police officer and firefighter sustained minor injuries during the rescue effort, authorities confirmed.

Crash and Rescue Effort

The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on August 5 near East Worthsville Road and County Road 75 East, close to U.S. 31. Emergency responders arrived to find the vehicle submerged with one occupant inside.

Fire crews pulled the driver — the sole occupant — from the water and transported them to St. Francis Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

First Responders Injured

According to a spokesperson for the Greenwood Fire Department, a police officer and firefighter were injured during the rescue but are expected to fully recover.

“Both sustained minor injuries during the rescue efforts and are expected to recover,” the department stated.

Road Closures and Investigation

Eastbound Worthsville Road remained closed for several hours as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash. Authorities have not yet released the driver’s identity pending notification of family.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the White River Township Fire Department, Bargersville Fire Department, Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis EMS, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Water Rescue Safety Reminders

Incidents like this highlight the dangers of submersion crashes and the urgency of rapid rescue:

  • Stay Calm: Panic can waste precious oxygen and delay escape efforts.
  • Unbuckle First: Remove your seatbelt before attempting to exit.
  • Open or Break a Window: Electric windows may fail; keep a window-breaking tool accessible.
  • Exit Quickly: Water pressure increases rapidly — you may only have seconds to act.

For first responders, water rescues present risks from cold shock, waterborne hazards, and limited visibility, emphasizing the need for specialized training and equipment.
