Harris County, TX – A high-speed street race on Highway 249 ended in flames Thursday night, leaving several people injured and resulting in criminal charges for one of the drivers, authorities said.
Crash Details
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. Thursday, according to Pct. 1 Public Information Officer.
Harris County Pct. 1 Constable Alan Rosen reported that two Dodge Chargers were racing at speeds approaching 100 mph when one collided with an uninvolved SUV.
The impact caused the Dodge Charger to burst into flames, temporarily trapping the driver inside the vehicle.
Injuries and Charges
The driver of the burning Charger managed to escape without fatal injuries. Authorities later charged the driver with racing causing serious injury.
The SUV occupants sustained injuries, though officials confirmed none were life-threatening. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported in the crash.
Fleeing Driver
The second Dodge Charger involved in the street race fled the scene and has not yet been apprehended, according to the reports.
Constable Rosen emphasized the danger of street racing, posting on his X account:
“This could have easily been a deadly tragedy. You race, you lose – big time.”
Ongoing Investigation
Deputies are continuing their investigation and are actively working to locate the second driver. Officials remind the public that street racing is extremely dangerous and can result in serious injury, criminal charges, or death.
