Des Moines, Iowa — A lengthy narcotics investigation in central Iowa has led to the arrest of a West Des Moines resident after authorities say they uncovered a substantial amount of fentanyl, prescription pills, cash, and various tools commonly used for drug distribution.
Months of Police Work Lead to Search Warrant
According to officials, the Des Moines Police Department’s Vice and Narcotics Control Section executed a search warrant on Monday at the home of 23-year-old Darrian Phillips. Investigators had been monitoring suspected drug activity connected to Phillips and gathered enough information to move forward with a full search of the property.
Police say the operation was part of an ongoing effort to combat the rising presence of fentanyl in the Des Moines metro area—an issue authorities have repeatedly warned poses an escalating threat to public safety.
Large Amounts of Fentanyl and Pills Recovered
During the search, officers reportedly discovered a range of illegal substances and drug-related items inside the residence. In total, investigators seized:
- Approximately 85 grams of fentanyl
- More than 200 alprazolam (Xanax) pills
- Marijuana
- Drug-weighing scales
- Packaging materials often associated with drug distribution
- Over $7,000 in cash, believed to be proceeds from illegal drug sales
Authorities noted that the amount of fentanyl alone was large enough to pose a severe threat to the community due to the drug’s extreme potency. Even a small dose can cause fatal overdoses, and law enforcement considers any recovery of fentanyl significant.
Fentanyl Presence Growing in Central Iowa
Police highlighted that the problem is far from isolated. The Des Moines Police Department revealed that officers have seized 4 pounds of fentanyl during the first nine months of 2025, a statistic they say demonstrates how rapidly the drug is spreading across central Iowa.

- Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp — Class D Felony (Two Counts)
- Prohibited Acts: Prescription Drug Violation — Serious Misdemeanor
- Possession of Marijuana — Serious Misdemeanor
