Deltona Teen Escapes as Intoxicated Man Allegedly Tries to Break into Home; Suspect Arrested (1)

Deltona, Florida – A Deltona man was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly attempting to break into a home where a teenage girl was alone, according to authorities. Deputies say the suspect appeared highly intoxicated and caused significant property damage during the incident.

Arrest Following Attempted Burglary

Richard Colon, 50, faces multiple charges, including:

  • Obstructing an officer without violence
  • Burglary of an occupied dwelling
  • Child neglect
  • Criminal mischief at or above $1,000

Volusia County deputies responded to the call and confronted Colon outside the home. Body-worn camera footage, shared on the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office social media, shows deputies approaching the house with guns drawn. Colon is seen exiting a screened-in patio with difficulty before being taken into custody and handcuffed.

Details of the Incident

According to investigators, the teenage girl inside the home escaped through the back door and reached a neighbor’s house for safety. Authorities reported that Colon had bent and damaged the patio door and allegedly broke off the handle to the main door leading into the residence.

During questioning, Colon did not provide an explanation for his presence at the home. Officials noted that he appeared highly intoxicated at the time of his arrest.

Bond and Release

Colon was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail and has since posted a $17,000 bond, resulting in his release Monday. He is expected to appear in court for further proceedings related to the charges.

Community Safety Reminder

Authorities emphasize the importance of staying vigilant, especially when home alone, and encourage residents to report suspicious activity immediately. Deputies also remind the public of the dangers of intoxicated individuals attempting crimes and the importance of emergency preparedness.
