Lovelock, NV — The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash involving three vehicles that forced a closure of westbound I-80 near mile marker 88, between Lovelock and the US-95 junction, early Wednesday morning, Dec. 3.
The interstate was closed at Toulon (Exit 93) for more than 12 hours, with drivers warned to avoid the frontage road due to washouts and unsafe conditions. One lane reopened around 1 p.m..
Crash Details
The incident occurred just before 1 a.m., involving:
- A black SUV
- A semi-truck hauling a box trailer loaded with pet food
- A semi-truck pulling a tanker full of milk
According to preliminary reports, the SUV was stopped across both westbound lanes when the pet-food semi-truck struck the SUV, ran off the shoulder, and overturned, leaving its trailer blocking the lanes. The milk tanker truck, attempting to avoid the SUV, collided with the overturned trailer, severing it and causing the tanker to overturn as well.
Casualties and Injuries

The SUV driver, an adult male, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The pet-food truck driver was trapped for several hours, later extricated by first responders, and transported with serious injuries. The milk tanker driver, also an adult male, died at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are continuing to investigate why the SUV was stopped across the interstate, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
Drivers are reminded to exercise caution on I-80 and surrounding roads, especially in winter conditions.
