WITH JANE JACOBS WALK ON SUNDAY, MAY 3RD

Jane Jacobs (b. May 4, 1916 – d. 2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. She had no formal training as a planner, and yet her 1961 treatise “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail. Jane Jacobs Walk is an international program of the Center for the Living City, a nonprofit organization created by people who knew Jane Jacobs. Like Park(ing) Day, the idea came about to promote community pride, concern, and engagement where people live, work, learn, and play. The 2-mile walk throughout CityCenter, on Sunday May 3rd, will last about two hours and promises hidden treasures, historic notes, tasty bites, and friendly chat.

At 1:00pm, gather with CityCenter’s Ted Killmer and guests, photographer Renato Ghio & food blogger Alicia Ghio – all 3 of whom live, work, learn, and play Downtown. Meet at CityCenter’s new office spaces, 268 Main Street. We’ll end the Walk @287 Gallery & Meeting Place, the home of the Cultural Alliance of Western CT, where exhibited artist Tom Wolff will be on hand. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your camera or a device to post your pictures on Instagram.

We’ve selected stops that are wheelchair accessible and that will interest all members of the family. You’ll receive your itinerary when we meet. Attendance is limited. Registration is required.
