Message from CT State Representative Dan Carter:
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
In light of Women’s Day about a week ago, I would like to share Legislation here in Hartford that seeks to promote women’s rights and their access to quality healthcare, as well as what advancements are being made in your local community to put these initiatives into action.
The House Republican Caucus put forward legislation to help women return to the workforce, streamline late child support payment collections, enhance science scholarships for women, make daycare more affordable and secure domestic violence shelters.
Click here to view a list of some of these bills. (Also see proposals list below.)
Proposals include:
HB 6121: AN ACT ESTABLISHING A FUND PROVIDING SCHOLARSHIPS TO WOMEN PURSUING DEGREES IN THE STEM FIELD
Requires the Board of Regents to establish a fund that would accept private contributions to offer scholarships to women pursuing degrees in STEM fields.
HB 6205: AN ACT CONCERNING IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE TASK FORCE TO STUDY METHODS FOR IMPROVED COLLECTION OF PAST DUE CHILD SUPPORT
Provides funding for the latest technology systems to facilitate communication between entities responsible for collecting child support payments.
HB 5848: AN ACT CONCERNING WOMEN RETURNING TO THE WORKFORCE
Establishes a workforce re-entry program for women who made a decision to leave the workforce. The program would include updating knowledge of technology, as well as interviewing skills.
HB 6249: AN ACT ESTABLISHING A TAX CREDIT PROGRAM FOR EMPLOYERS WHO OFFER ON-SITE CHILD DAY CARE OPTIONS FOR EMPLOYEES
Establish a tax credit program for businesses that provide on-site daycare services for children of employees.
HB 5959: AN ACT PROVIDING SUFFICIENT STATE FUNDING TO MAINTAIN TWENTY-FOUR-HOUR STAFFING AT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTERS
Provide sufficient funding to ensure 24-hour security at all Connecticut domestic violence shelters.
HB 5981: AN ACT CONCERNING THE ANGEL INVESTOR TAX CREDIT PROGRAM AND WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES
To promote investment in women-owned businesses in Connecticut by requiring not less than 25% of the annual aggregate amount of angel investor tax credits be awarded to companies that invest in women-owned businesses.
We need to focus more attention on these issues because they will strengthen families in Connecticut and make our households more productive and successful. These proposals, in many ways, will make women and single parents better able to care for their children.
Much of our agenda targeting women and families can be initiated within existing budgets by making priority choices and budget reductions. Existing programs that prove ineffective or too costly should be scrapped and the revenue re-directed toward these efforts.
