RATHDRUM, Idaho — A 61-year-old man was taken into custody following a major drug bust in Kootenai County, where detectives discovered an active crack cocaine lab, large quantities of narcotics, and disturbing evidence of children living in unsafe conditions behind the property.
Search Warrant Leads to Major Drug Discovery
On October 31, detectives from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Unit, assisted by the Coeur d’Alene Police Department’s Community Action Team, executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 7000 block of West Crenshaw Street in Rathdrum.
The search was part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation targeting illegal narcotics operations in the area. Inside the home, investigators uncovered an active crack cocaine manufacturing setup, along with powder cocaine, methamphetamine, hydrocodone pills, and more than two pounds of psilocybin mushrooms.
Firearms, Cash, and Drug Equipment Seized
Authorities also seized multiple firearms, ammunition, drug packaging materials, and cash, all believed to be linked to drug distribution.
The suspect, James M. Pond, 61, was arrested and charged with manufacturing crack cocaine and possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver. He was booked into the Kootenai County Jail, where he is currently being held without bail.
Family with Children Found Living in Shed
During the search, detectives made a troubling discovery — a family with three children was found living in a shed behind the main residence, as per reports.
The Rathdrum Police Department immediately launched a separate child abuse investigation. The parents of the children have been issued summons, and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare has taken custody of the minors to ensure their safety.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office stated that the investigation remains active, with more charges possible as evidence is processed.
