Report by Paula Antolini, March 31, 2020, 11:08AM EDT

Community Update from First selectman Matthew Knickerbocker, Monday, March 30, 2020:

Earlier this evening Governor Lamont issued Executive Order No. 7Q to further slow the spread of COVID-19. Highlights of 7Q latest order are as follows:

  • Child care facilities are limited to a maximum of 10 children in their care at any one time. This applies to all child care facilities, including daycares, family child care homes, youth camps and any child care facility that is exempt from licensing requirements.
  • Requires screening of all child care workers and children for cough, fever or other signs of respiratory infection prior to entering any child care facility.
  • Allows notarizations to be performed remotely via video conference. Restrictions and conditions apply.

As of 4:30pm this afternoon, state health officials reported 35 confirmed cases in Bethel. As mentioned in previous updates, the state Department of Public Health does not release demographical data on patients. At present the state’s health care system is still able to accommodate the influx of new COVID patients who require hospital care, but a surge of new cases is expected in the next two to three weeks. State officials are working with the US Army to increase hospital capacity by setting up mobile field hospitals in multiple locations around the state.

It is more important than ever that everyone follows the preventative measures to keep yourself and your family from being exposed to the virus. The goal is to slow down the spread of new infections to flatten the curve to keep new cases from overwhelming the state’s hospital capacity.

Before I close this update, I want to take a moment to thank the many people who remain on the job during this time to help keep us functioning as a community. From the doctors, the nurses, the aids and medical technicians, to the police, fire and ambulance personnel who still respond to every call, to the folks who keep food coming to our grocery stores, to the volunteers who are feeding our kids and making sure our seniors are not going hungry, and to all the others I did not mention here, I want you to know you are not taken for granted.  I know I speak for all of us when I say we appreciate every one of you.   Stay home, stay safe!

Matt Knickerbocker
