Country Singer’s Mother Killed in Virginia Home Invasion; Father Fatally Shoots Attacker

Rockingham County, VA — A home invasion in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley turned deadly when an intruder fatally stabbed the mother of aspiring country music artist Spencer Hatcher before his father shot and killed the attacker, authorities said.

Attack in the Middle of the Night

According to Fox News, 62-year-old Holly Hatcher, a former teacher, was killed shortly after midnight on Sunday, August 3, when 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker of Pikesville, Maryland, broke into the family’s home with a large knife. Her husband, 65-year-old Michael Hatcher, was also injured in the attack.

“Speaking personally, this is 31 years in law enforcement for me, I have never seen anything like this in my entire career, just the way the unusual, unique and just crazy situation that this turned out to be,”
Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson, Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office

Walker had no known criminal history, aside from a bizarre car crash two days earlier. Officials said he fatally stabbed Holly before engaging in a violent struggle with Michael, who was left with visible injuries and a bandaged arm.

Father Ends Struggle With a Fatal Shot

The confrontation spilled into the driveway, where Michael managed to retrieve a loaded pistol from his vehicle. He fired a single shot, killing Walker at the scene. Sheriff Hutcheson described the crime as “highly unusual” and said investigators are still working to determine a motive.

  • The intruder had rented a campsite at Endless Caverns two days prior.
  • Surveillance video showed him purchasing a sleeping bag and knife at a local Walmart before the attack.

A Sheriff’s Personal Connection

Sheriff Hutcheson revealed a personal bond with the victim, saying:

“My oldest son had Holly as a teacher in school, absolutely loved her, and I’m sure I can speak for many, many other children she taught over the years as to what a wonderful, wonderful teacher and influence on their life that she was.”

Holly spent 19 years working for Rockingham County Public Schools, where colleagues remembered her as a “beloved” educator.

Community Support in the Aftermath

Michael Hatcher thanked the sheriff’s office and the community for their overwhelming support:

“We’ve cried, we’ve hurt, we’ve hugged, and we have found more love than we have ever known has existed between us and between you. Thank you.”

Authorities confirmed that a house fire that occurred about five hours earlier was unrelated to the suspect and was accidental.

Impact on Country Music Career

31-year-old Spencer Hatcher, who signed with Stone Country Records in October, has canceled at least three upcoming performances, including appearances at the VOA Country Music Fest in Ohio and the Rockingham County Fair.

In a post on Instagram, Spencer wrote:

“I hope to make these dates up to my fans in the future. I appreciate everyone that has lent their support to me and my loved ones.”

Music executive Benny Brown praised Spencer’s talent when signing him, saying,

“When Spencer first came onto my radar, his style and sky-high potential reminded me of a young George Strait… he feels like the right artist arriving at just the right time in country music.”

Investigators are continuing to piece together Walker’s movements and potential motives. The sheriff’s office says the case remains active.
