Today we have another wonderful written piece from Jeanne Claire Probst, in our continuing literary series. We are thrilled to have author/poet/blogger Jeanne Claire Probst join Bethel Advocate as a contributor, sharing her “Thought and Poem” written works with us. Her work covers many topics. She is excited to be fulfilling a life-long dream of writing a novel of which “The Fifteen Houses, a Novel” is her first published work. I think you will enjoy! THOUGHT AND POEM

Sometimes I find myself trying to catch my breath because things happen too fast around me. Do you know what I mean? Really, though, why do we always have to make changes even when what “was” was a good thing?
I opened a package of Oreo Cookies the other day and it shocked me to see that they reduced the size of the cookie from what it had been when I was younger. I opened a box of TWINKIES and it was the same…the TWINKIES shrunk! And can you tell me what was wrong with the original Coca Cola? And while we are at it, what was wrong with the clothing we wore in the 1960’s and 1970’s?
I would like to sit down with all the people who make these changes for us… without asking for our permission. I liked my cookies bigger, I liked my TWINKIES the original size, I like the original Coca Cola and I thrived on the rebellious clothing I wore when I was younger as I had a statement to make.
Breaking it all down, I really do not like changes. Changes make me feel older and at times I don’t think I am moving fast enough so that I can keep up with all the changes going on around me. If these changes were so good for me, why am I not changing for the better? I am aging, I am sicker; I am bigger even though the size portions were reduced. Shouldn’t I be getting senior aging beautiful, healthier and smaller (not shorter)? If you were to ask me, I think that this world is aiding to our getting crazier with all these changes going on today. I don’t like changes… enough already! You think?

What a crazy life we live…
What gives?
Nothing is staying the same…
And I do not like things to change!
First they change the type of coca cola we drink…
Next they change the size of our favorite cookies and this stinks…
They keep changing the of style clothing we need to wear to be chic…
And you have to drink milkshakes with spoons because they are too thick!
They change the number of calories you can eat as you age…
No longer can we lie on our couches because in doing exercises we must engage…
They changed the speed limits to save on gas…
Everything is changing way too fast!
You do not have time to think…
And allow new changes to sink in because more changes happen in between eye-blinks…
You feel you need a change from this routine…
The world around us is spinning…too many changes…it seems!
So you wish to take the next shuttle to the moon and this you arrange…
But the flight schedule changed…
You missed your flight…
Someone apologizes for the slight oversight!
Life has us going around like a merry go round…
You never know where you should be or if you can’t remember where you were and if you need to be found…
You spend your days living in an unending maze…
Why…it is all because of change!

The Fifteen Houses, a Novel The Fifteen Houses is the first book of this new and exciting series to be published. Staged in the beautiful and scenic palate of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, in the early 1950’s, the main character delves into her reoccurring and discomforting memories of her younger, formative years.
