‘Change: The hard work must start!’ Letter to the Editor

OPINION / LETTER TO THE EDITOR

As protesting continues, people attending and being seen to voice outrage, the arduous work of changing the system needs to be the immediate and urgent focus.

Real change involves laws, policies, agencies and practices buried in 100’s of thousands or even millions of words. Real change is also personal, and involves each of us practicing that aspect of the “golden rule” that encourages each of us to treat each other as we would, ourselves, want to be treated.

Changing the system must include consultation with, and direct involvement of people who are not currently part of that system which needs changing.  If the current “powers that be” actually wanted change, it would have already happened.

Starting at the local level and working up, a model for change can start with assessing the current state of affairs. What are current hiring and HR policies for government? Are practices adhering to those policies, resulting in (eventually) a workforce that is representative of the local population? What’s blocking that?

Which laws need to be eliminated, changed, or new laws considered; a lengthy deliberation.

For law enforcement, how are rules of engagement made and applied? What criteria are used for hiring and firing? Where do enforcement tactics exceed what’s appropriate for the laws being enforced.  Remember, our officers are often put into life and death scenarios (their own lives as well as suspects). Rules of engagement must account for reality, as well as accounting for justice.

For all members of the government, and those who influence such as unions; has the desire to get and keep power become an overriding concern so as to impede needed change?

These are the hard issues following protest and outrage. Getting to substantive change is long overdue.

“Justice for all” must mean Justice for ALL.
