Indianapolis, IN – A wave of August heat is sweeping through central Indiana as temperatures climb into the upper 80s and low 90s, bringing humid, uncomfortable conditions just in time for the weekend. Though a few stray showers are possible early Thursday evening, the overall weather pattern is trending hot and dry.
Warmest Night in Over a Week
Thursday night will be the warmest in more than a week, with overnight lows holding at or just above 70°F across most of the region. This is a few degrees above the normal low of 66°F for Indianapolis — signaling the return of sticky, sleepless nights without the benefit of natural cooling.
Friday and Saturday: High Heat, But Less Muggy
Heading into Friday and Saturday, central Indiana will see daytime highs near 90°F. Though heat index values will climb slightly above that, the humidity will not be as intense as it was in late July.
As per Fox59, residents should still expect it to feel uncomfortably warm, particularly during the afternoon hours. Outdoor plans are still feasible, but hydration and sun protection are essential.
Hot Streak Continues: 74% of Days Above Normal
Since June 1, nearly three-quarters of days (74%) have registered above-average temperatures. With this heat spell continuing, that percentage is expected to increase as August progresses.
Although average high temperatures begin to slowly decline later in the month, meteorologists anticipate multiple days of upper 80s and near-90°F readings ahead.
Dry Pattern Holds Through the Weekend
No significant rain is expected through Sunday, and conditions will remain mostly sunny and dry. That’s good news for weekend events, but bad news for drought-stressed areas, especially around Indianapolis, which has been in a rainfall deficit since June 1.
Meanwhile, Bloomington has seen a surplus of nearly six inches, illustrating the uneven distribution of rainfall across the state.
Rain Returns Next Week
Starting Monday, daily rain and storm chances return, offering some relief to parched lawns and dry fields. Rainfall amounts may vary greatly, and while some areas may remain dry, others could see brief heavy downpours.
How to Stay Safe in Heat and Humidity
With temperatures hovering near 90°F, it’s important to:
- Stay hydrated throughout the day
- Limit outdoor work or exercise to early mornings or evenings
- Check in on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing
- Keep pets cool and out of hot vehicles
