CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. – A 28-year-old man from Carmel Valley has been sentenced to nine months in jail and one year of probation after pleading guilty to exposing himself to schoolgirls walking home through the neighborhood.
Details of the Offenses
According to the San Diego City Attorney’s Office, Rene Cruz committed multiple acts of indecent exposure while driving through local school zones. The incidents targeted young female students from Solana Pacific Elementary School, Ashley Falls Elementary School, Carmel Valley Middle School, and Torrey Pines High School.
Authorities said Cruz would drive alongside victims and expose himself through an open passenger-side door. These alarming events prompted reports from the community and led to a formal investigation in the fall of last year.
Charges and Guilty Plea
Cruz was arrested and later pleaded guilty to charges of indecent exposure and annoying or molesting a child, both serious offenses under California law.
A representative from the City Attorney’s Office confirmed that Cruz will begin serving his sentence within two weeks. The custodial sentence is part of a broader set of consequences designed to protect the community and ensure continued oversight of the offender as reported by The Times of San Diego.
Additional Restrictions and Monitoring
In addition to jail time and probation, Cruz is now required to:
- Register as a sex offender
- Be monitored via GPS
- Attend sex offender therapy
- Remain at least 100 yards away from all San Diego County pre-K, elementary, middle, and high schools
These restrictions are part of a long-term strategy to limit Cruz’s access to areas where children may be present and reduce the risk of reoffending.
Community Response and Protection Measures
This case has brought renewed attention to child safety in public areas and school zones. School officials and local law enforcement continue to encourage parents and students to report suspicious behavior immediately and remain aware of their surroundings.
Protecting Children from Predators
Parents and guardians are urged to speak openly with children about personal safety, including how to respond if they feel uncomfortable or threatened. Community vigilance plays a crucial role in identifying and stopping inappropriate behavior before it escalates.
