Parker County, TX – A tragic car crash Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of an 82-year-old Minnesota woman, while another occupant was hospitalized, authorities said.

Details of the Crash

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash occurred around 4:40 p.m. on Tucker Drive, just north of Deer Track Road. A witness reported that the driver of a 1996 Ford Bronco, identified as Karen Winegarner, 61, of Weatherford, appeared to slump over while driving, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and collide with a tree.

The passenger, Carolyn Otto, 82, of Lakeville, Minnesota, was transported to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead, according to DPS. Winegarner was taken to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth with injuries that are still being evaluated.

Response and Investigation

Local authorities, including Parker County emergency responders and DPS, arrived quickly at the scene. WFAA reported that the DPS troopers are investigating the crash to determine the exact cause, including whether any medical issues, vehicle malfunction, or other factors contributed to the accident.

Officials reminded drivers to remain alert on rural roads and be cautious of conditions that may increase the risk of accidents, particularly when traveling at higher speeds or during late afternoons when visibility can be reduced.

What to Do If You Witness a Crash

Authorities encourage anyone who witnesses an accident to take the following steps:

  • Ensure your safety first – pull over safely and turn on hazard lights.
  • Call 911 immediately to report the accident and provide accurate details, including location, vehicles involved, and injuries.
  • Do not move injured persons unless there is an immediate threat, such as a fire.
  • Provide statements to law enforcement and, if safe, document the scene with photos or videos.

Following these steps can help emergency responders arrive quickly and may save lives.

Community and Road Safety

DPS and Parker County officials urged drivers to remain vigilant, drive at safe speeds, and be prepared for unexpected events on the road. Accidents like this highlight the importance of road safety and attentiveness, especially when driving with passengers.
