Louisville, KY – A dramatic crash in east Louisville triggered a fire and widespread power outages on Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle slammed into an apartment building, officials confirmed. The incident unfolded during the busy afternoon hours, prompting an emergency response from police, firefighters, and utility crews.
Despite the intense flames and damage to the building, authorities say no residents were injured, and all occupants were safely evacuated.
Crash at Busy Intersection Leads to Chain Reaction
According to Louisville Metro Police, the incident began just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of Westport Road and Langdon Drive. Investigators said a vehicle first collided with another car at the intersection before continuing forward and striking a gas line.
The impact caused the vehicle to veer off course and crash directly into the nearby Rolling Hills Apartments, setting off a dangerous chain of events.
Fire Erupts After Gas Line Is Struck
Emergency crews say the collision with the gas line caused an immediate fire, with flames shooting through the roof of the apartment building. Thick smoke and visible flames alarmed nearby residents and drivers, leading to a rapid response from fire crews who worked to contain the blaze.
Firefighters focused on extinguishing the fire while ensuring the structural safety of the building. Utility workers were also called to shut off gas and secure the area.
Power Outages Reported Along Langdon Drive
Downed utility lines caused by the crash led to power outages along Langdon Drive, further complicating the emergency response. Crews worked to stabilize the area while officers blocked off portions of the roadway to keep the public safe.

Residents in the immediate area were advised to avoid the scene as emergency operations continued into the evening.
Apartment Building Evacuated, No Residents Hurt
Louisville Metro Police confirmed that officers evacuated the apartment building shortly after the fire broke out. All residents were able to exit safely, and no injuries were reported inside the building.
Officials credited the quick response of first responders for preventing further injuries or loss of life, especially given the severity of the fire.
Drivers Treated for Injuries
The driver whose vehicle crashed into the apartment building was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the initial collision was treated at the scene for minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
Authorities have not released the names or ages of the drivers involved.
No Charges Expected
Police stated that no charges are expected in connection with the crash. Investigators continue to review the circumstances leading up to the incident, including traffic conditions and vehicle movement prior to the collision.
Ongoing Cleanup and Repairs
As of Tuesday evening, cleanup efforts were underway at the scene. Fire damage, structural impact, and utility disruptions will require additional inspections before residents can fully return to normal routines.
Officials said updates will be provided as more information becomes available and repairs progress.
