Altadena, CA – A California man is threatening legal action against the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) after reportedly coexisting with a 550-pound black bear under his home for over a month. The massive animal has caused significant property damage and sleepless nights for the homeowner, Ken Johnson, of Altadena.
Bear Takes Up Residence in Crawlspace
According to Johnson, the bear first moved into the small crawlspace beneath his home on November 30, creating a daily ordeal for him. “This has gone on long enough, and it’s something that they should deal with,” Johnson told KTLA. He said the bear is a tagged animal that the CDFW has previously handled but chose not to euthanize.
The bear has reportedly emerged nightly, waking Johnson as early as 5 a.m., forcing him to monitor the animal’s movements constantly. He described being unable to take a hot shower on Christmas Eve due to damage caused by the creature and having to sleep in unusual locations to keep an eye on it.
Dispute with California Department of Fish and Wildlife
Johnson claims the CDFW has abandoned efforts to remove the bear, prompting him to threaten a lawsuit. “Now what? It’s all up to me, and I’m supposed to watch my phone when he comes out in the middle of the night?” Johnson said.
CDFW, however, disputes these claims. A spokesperson told The Post, “Despite very limited staff, CDFW biologists have been in constant communication with this homeowner since this bear was reported entering his unsecured crawlspace in November. We remain committed to helping this homeowner and have never indicated otherwise.”
Failed Trapping Efforts
Authorities deployed a cherry and caramel scent spray designed to lure the bear out, but the effort failed. A large metal trap containing fried chicken, sardines, shrimp, peanut butter, and fruit was later used, but it captured a different bear roaming the neighborhood.
Footage obtained by The Post shows the bear emerging from the crawlspace on Christmas morning, briefly circling the property before retreating back underneath. Johnson said the bear continues to wake him early and disrupt his daily life, while causing ongoing damage to his home.
Home Damage and Daily Challenges
The bear has inflicted physical damage to the home, prompting Johnson to turn off his gas on Christmas Eve and monitor the property constantly. “I can’t take a hot shower. I’ve got to monitor the situation all the time,” he said, noting the stress of the prolonged encounter.
Department Response
The CDFW emphasized its commitment to helping Californians with unwelcome wildlife encounters, which can pose safety risks and complicated challenges for peaceful coexistence. Officials maintain that biologists have remained engaged and that public safety remains a priority.
