Six police officers were ambushed at approximately 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning, in Baton Rouge, La, and three officers are dead.

Montrell Jackson, age 32, leaves behind a wife and 4-month old son, with the Baton Rouge Police Department for 10 years.  His Facebook post was shared:

Brad Garafola, age 45, a Sheriff’s Deputy, married father of four, had been with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office for 24 years.  Selected as the Civil Deputy of the Month in January 2013

Matthew Gerald, age 41, Baton Rouge Police Department, married with two children, of Denham Springs, Louisiana. Former Marine and Black Hawk crew chief in the Army.  Serving in both the Marines and the Army, and did three tours to Iraq. Received National Defense Service and Marine Corps Good Conduct medals.

“Nicholas Tullier of the uniform patrol traffic division in the sheriff’s office was shot and is in critical condition. Bruce Simmons, who also worked in the traffic division, sustained injuries not considered life-threatening, the sheriff’s office said,” reports CNN.

In a press conference in Baton Rouge this afternoon, where several officials spoke including Col. Michael Edmundson, Superintendent Louisiana State Police; Chief Carl Dabadie, Baton Rouge Police; Mayor Kip Holden, Baton Rouge La.; Governor John Bel Edwards, (D) Louisiana; Walter Green, United States Attorney, Middle District of Louisiana; we now know:

–Six police officers were shot by Gavin Long, three were killed, one officer is fighting for his life.

–gunman Gavin Long is an ex-Marine, did the crime on his 29th birthday

–Col. Michael Edmundson said Baton Rouge Police Officer SWAT took the shot that killed the gunman, officer killed gunman from 100 yards away

–gunman came from Kansas days before the attack

–killer looked for areas to target police

–killer acted with “tactical” strategy

–gunman returned and killed wounded officer and deputy who went back to help him

–Kip Holden used a quote from the Bible, “Ye though you slay me, I will rise again” that symbolized their determination.

–police: “no doubt” attack was ambush

–police: deputy killed after going to help injured comrade

–police: Baton Rouge officers were “assassinated”

–Col. Edmundson said there are many questions: Why did gunman pick Baton Rouge? Why did he pick that location in Baton Rouge? Why did he shoot police officers? Because police frequent the location?  Or where they were getting police car washed?

–Col. Edmundson, “He was articulate in all manners of engagement, we’ll just leave it at that.”

–we believe he was here several days we don’t want to go into any more than that (cannot confirm shooter was in Baton Rouge in days before shooting)

–9-1-1 caller said, “dude on Airline Highway is carrying a rifle … no indication shooter made those calls himself

–regarding surviving officer in critical, Sheriff said: “shot in head and stomach … prognosis very critical condition …he’s been going in and out …vitals have gone up and down …praying for him …n gods hands … he’s not in good shape at all

–Governor John Bel Edwards: “We’re going to get through this, we are going to be more united than ever, and we support our police officers.”

President Obama statement issued from The White House:

“I condemn, in the strongest sense of the word, the attack on law enforcement in Baton Rouge. For the second time in two weeks, police officers who put their lives on the line for ours every day were doing their job when they were killed in a cowardly and reprehensible assault. These are attacks on public servants, on the rule of law, and on civilized society, and they have to stop.

“I’ve offered my full support, and the full support of the federal government, to Governor Edwards, Mayor Holden, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Baton Rouge Police Department. And make no mistake – justice will be done.

“We may not yet know the motives for this attack, but I want to be clear: there is no justification for violence against law enforcement. None. These attacks are the work of cowards who speak for no one. They right no wrongs. They advance no causes. The officers in Baton Rouge; the officers in Dallas – they were our fellow Americans, part of our community, part of our country, with people who loved and needed them, and who need us now – all of us – to be at our best.

“Today, on the Lord’s day, all of us stand united in prayer with the people of Baton Rouge, with the police officers who’ve been wounded, and with the grieving families of the fallen. May God bless them all.”

There is NO active shooter situation presently in Baton Rouge, La.  The Baton Rouge Police reported at a news conference today that they believe “the person that shot and killed our officers, that he is the person that was killed at the scene.”

Three officers were killed, three officers were injured, two are in stable condition, one is fighting for his life.

Gov. John Bel Edwards: “The violence just has to stop.”  Referring to the police officers, “They are real life everyday heroes.”  Edwards said, “We have to do better.” “An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” he said.

Sheriff’s Office: One suspect dead, two believed at large.  Shooter was dressed all in black, CNN reports.  They do not know at this time if it was a planned attack.  A witness CNN interviewed said the shooter was dressed in “Ninja” style, all black, running away with a rifle.  Witness thinks the weapon was a semi-automatic weapon judging from the sound of the gunfire he heard.  Witness was located near Party City directly behind the scene, 25 yards from gunman, he reported on CNN.

(Baton Rouge, La) – Six police officers were ambushed at approximately 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning, in Baton Rouge, La, and three officers are dead, the city’s Mayor Kip Holden told NBC News, reports Reuters.  Louisiana State Police official told NBC that a gunman was shot, but his condition was not clear.

The officers were responding to  call for shots fired when at least one gunman shot them as he was walking down the highway with a rifle.

Multiple officers, police and sheriff’s deputies, were involved in the shooting incident and sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals, and are fighting for their lives, CNN reports.

Governor Edwards will be holding a press conference at 4:00 p.m. EDT where we will learn more information.
