The the National Parks Service said that the Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island were evacuated shortly before 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 24, 2015, due to security concerns, but did not indicate the exact cause of what prompted the evacuation and subsequent police investigation.
Law enforcement sources told NBC 4 New York that parks police received a report of a suspicious package.
NBC also reports that tourists were ferried off of the island after parks police patrolling with dogs near a visitors’ locker area picked up the scent of a suspicious package. They report that NYPD’s bomb squad was called to the scene, along with EMS workers, and a security sweep of the island is being conducted. The FBI is also monitoring the investigation.
Visiting tourists photographed the hundreds of people waiting for ferries at the scene, and tweeted photos.
